Correlation, linear and logistic regression with R - Online

This live, online course offers hands-on understanding of correlation, linear and logistic regression. (Advanced Course). Price: £330 for SRA members, £440 for non-members. * This course runs over three consecutive afternoons and uses Zoom software *

"Excellent online training course. The material for the course was very well organised. The explanations provided by Dr Campanelli and the exercises in R were very helpful and helped me to understand better the regression models. I highly recommend attending this training in the Social Research Association."

"The tutor went out of her way to support the class with additional materials to clarify points of understanding."

Introduction/Overview

For this course you need some experience of conducting statistical tests (e.g. t-test, chi-square or other tests). But you can be new to the R software. Both R and RStudio need to be downloaded and installed before the course (see Software below).

Regression analysis is one of the most widely used statistical methods. Dr. Pamela Campanelli has brought this popular University of Hong Kong course to the SRA. Rather than just clicking on tabs in statistical software, learn the statistical concepts behind the software. Learn about correlation, linear regression (bivariate and multiple) and logistic regression using data from a health survey. Learn how to use the R software to make these analyses. The course is highly interactive and there are workshop sessions throughout.

Learning objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Be able to execute a correlation, bivariate regression, multiple regression and logistic regression and various statistical diagnostics in R.
  • Have a good awareness of the statistical concepts behind correlation and regression.
  • Have knowledge of the issues which arise with these analysis methods and how to solve these issues.

Topics

The key stages and objectives of the analytical process in qualitative research

  • Scatterplots, covariance and correlation
  • Bivariate regression
  • Multiple regression
  • Logistic regression
  • Assumptions behind the models
  • Creating and using dummy variables
  • Building interaction terms
  • This course is also an introduction to the R software for these topics

Who will benefit

People with a good understanding of basic statistics, who want to expand their knowledge to regression and the R software for regression. The course is also for people who want knowledge of these topics for critiquing the work of others.

Software

You will need to download R and then R Studio BEFORE the course.

This website gives useful instructions on how to do this for Mac and Windows users. Note that you do NOT need to install the SDSFoundations Package.

Course tutor

Dr Pamela Campanelli is a Survey Methods Consultant and runs The Survey Coach business. She is also a Chartered Statistician, Chartered Scientist and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. She has worked at the University of Michigan, the U.S. Bureau of the Census, ISER at the University of Essex, and NatCen Social Research. She has both led and been a team member on ESRC grants (one on survey nonresponse and one on measurement error in mixed mode surveys). She regularly teaches short courses in the UK and abroad for government departments, survey research companies, universities, as well as for various other institutions and businesses.
