SRA North and Midlands Group Free Evening Seminar: Challenges and Innovations in Social Research

Ed Ferrari, Director of the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University, will describe some of the Centre's work, using recent projects to illuminate key methodological challenges in social research.  A wide range of methods - social surveys, econometric modelling/cost-benefit analysis, qualitative and ethnographic methods, and spatial analysis of big data - will be discussed, in projects covering:

  • Planning and housing policy within devolved city regions
  • Transport and access to labour markets for low income households
  • Policy evaluation

The SRA represents around 100 independent researchers. We are holding a series of invitation-only free events for these members, to find out about the professional issues they face and what more we can do to help.

The event will be led by Helen Kara, independent researcher and SRA trustee, and co-hosted by Sophie Ellison, Chair of SRA Scotland branch. It will be highly participatory, and small scale, with no more than 40 people.

SRA annual conference 2017: Social Research in a Sceptical Age

£65 to £130 for SRA members, £175 for non-members

The climate of suspicion towards ‘experts’ has put many researchers on the defensive. Is it enough simply to assert the value of rigorous methods, or should we be checking, sharpening and improving our tools? If ‘post-truth’ carries real meaning then the pressure is on researchers to find a positive response - such as clearly communicating our findings and why they matter; and demonstrating how high standards in design, conduct and analysis are built in to our research.

Plenary speakers:

  • John Pullinger, National Statistician: Keynote speaker
  • Will Moy, Director of Full Fact
  • Suzanne Hall, Head of Qualitative Research, Ipsos MORI
  • Professor Tim May, Deputy Director, Sheffield Methods Institute
  • Another voice with David Walker
