Getting to yes in the digital age: Informing participants and verifying consent (London)

2.30 - 5 pm

Informed consent means potential participants know the expectations, risks and rights involved and agree to take part in a study, typically with a signed agreement. Online researchers view traditional ways of meeting consent requirements as impractical and fear that participants are unlikely to be “informed” by a lengthy consent document. Are researchers acting ethically if they obtain a signature but the participant has not been genuinely informed? How can researchers navigate the consent process in studies using posted data from publicly available social media sites?

In this hands-on seminar, Janet Salmons and Matt Williams will discuss the ethical challenges of obtaining informed consent in digital research and walk through multiple ways to use blogs, wikis or media to inform participants, and digital methods to verify agreement online.

Chair: Kandy Woodfield of NatCen Social Research and NSMNSS.
